Bench Events are incredibly proud to be supporting the inspiring Yorkshire Rows

Nov 12, 2015

The team of four working mums are taking part in the Talisker Whiskey Atlantic Challenge, proving to themselves and others how with hard work, grit determination and team spirit anyone can achieve anything. Once completed the self-confessed ‘mad women’, Janette, Frances, Helen and Niki will be the oldest crew of four to row any ocean, and they only started rowing three years ago!

Their spirit really resonated with us here at Bench, having last year been involved in our own adventure of playing the highest game of cricket ever recorded on top of Mount Kilimanjaro…but, we didn’t have to face storms, salt rash, sleep deprivation or sharks!

The Talisker Whiskey Challenge is one of the toughest races on earth, more people have been into space or climbed Everest than do what these women are about to do.  Leaving the port of  San Sebastian in La Gomera they will row 2 hours on, 2 hours off, 24 hours a day on their 8 metre long boat, reaching Antigua 40 to 90 days later – all pending the sea conditions.

So what made them decide to take on this feat? “It all happened over a glass wine, like these things do,” explained Janette, “Frances had done some adventurous challenges before and just said at a dinner ‘Who wants to row the Atlantic?’” After months of planning, mental and physical preparation, their boat is currently on it’s way to the start line.  “We are as prepared as we can be,” Janette says. “We completely recognise you can’t prepare yourself for something like this, but we’ve done more than enough. We’ll definitely get across – how quickly is anybody’s guess. But we’ll get across – that is a dead cert.”

Along their journey the Yorkshire Rows will be raising as much money as possible for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centre.

Janette, Frances, Helen and Niki, we wish you all the best, we will be cheering you on with every stroke and look forward to sharing your journey here on our blog.
